Marci Shimoff is one of the bestselling female nonfiction autho Quite an inspiring book. Marci Shimoff is one of the bestselling female nonfiction authors of all time. In addition, she's a featured teacher in the international film and book sensation, The Secret. I learned quite a number of lessons from this book. I learned that we can be happy if we want to even for no reason and that is actually what happiness should be. We can choose to be happy by ourselves and not depend on other people.
According to Shimoff, we have happy genes so some of us are programmed to be happier than others but we need to cultivate those genes. Happiness should not be hinged on material things or success or having friends or loved ones by our side. They sure can make us happy but they are temporary. What we need to nourish is the happiness gene that is built inside of us.
The book is well-written and organized. Smimoff would first enumerate the different rules not just the seven because there are many other sub-rules inside of them and then expound them by giving examples from his letter senders, her experiences and she had a lot to say about her own self that I liked more than the other examples and excerpts from other books like Elizabeth Gilbert's Eat, Pray, Love 1 star and Rhonda Byrne's The Secret.
Some of the rules should not be new to most of us. However, just like most of the self-help books, we all need to be reminded of these things. Sometimes, we are too busy with our daily lives that we take good grains of salt for granted or we overlook these things. Thank God there are people like Shimoff, Byrne and Macomber to constantly remind us to slow down and look at how we behave and deal with people at home, in the office, on the streets or even online. I ask her and she goes on about how this book changed her life etcetera etc. I start counting days on how long this book's influence will last on my mother. I'm amazed really amazed. It lasted for about 4months.
This forth month might be the last but it was a good and peaceful 4 months of my life with my mother. I advise all teenage girls and boys to give this to their mothers- Who in their opinion needs to take a chill pill now and again.

If I told you the page and phrase that changed my life when my heart burst and my head said "Ah,HA! I'm passing this to my sister, and then my mother, and then I want it back so I can re-visit some of the exercises. I don't think it's possible to be TOO happy! I really thought this book was interesting and informative.
The author seemed to make a lot of sense. Although genetics does plan a part in happiness, behaviors and responses to situations can be changed by the individual. I do wish that I had had the print version instead or the audio book, as there are some exercises throughout the book that would have been easier to think about and respond at ones leisure. I remember skimming the library self-help section in a brain-dead daze. I was twelve? As hard as it is to believe, I was suffering from severe depression. No, it was not your typical "teenage blues". It wasn't just a "phase" instigated by hormones and other bullshit that adults tried to drill into my head I just felt like my life was lacking meaning and purpose, and well So I checked this book out from the I remember skimming the library self-help section in a brain-dead daze.
So I checked this book out from the library, much to my chagrin. Mainly because the librarian kept giving dirty looks over her glasses as she was scanning it out. She was probably wondering why a gawky, ungainly, girl like me was not hauling out Twilight and Harry Potter books on the counter in lieu of the self-help book. But I digress! I didn't find this book much conducive to pulling me out of my depression.
The topics covered were I vaguely remember the book as well as I want to, but I do remember reading a lot of mundane analogies. Although, I did find the quotes stuffed in here and there, a bit inspirational. For a person recovering from depression, or simply wants to get out, I suggest you read "The 7 Habits For Teens" by Sean Covey son of Stephen Covey , because Stephen Covey's original version is just full of academic pompousness and hard to read. The book is really a joy to read. The stories are inspiring, the quotes are uplifting, the exercises are effective, and there are even comics to make you smile. For instance, in one chapter where she talks about happiness robbers, there's a picture labeled "Low Self-Esteem" that shows a man writing in his diary, saying, "Dear Diary, Sorry to bother you again Oct 08, Karen rated it really liked it.
Many of these are things that I already knew, however, this book brings them all together and gives steps to practice these.
I enjoyed the stories and have been trying to be conscientious about practicing the actions outlined in the book. I find that they really help lift me out of a bad mood.
