In teaching this course herself, PIke realized that teachers or parents would benefit from additional planning information to present the lessons in Windows to the World. So in the syllabus, she clearly describes what handouts will be needed for each class session and where these are located.
She adds brief notes about the class time itself, most of which applies whether it's a group class or a single student. In addition, she specifies what to do with homework assignments. The syllabus has an appendix with some quizzes, answer keys, and some pages with small cards to be used for activities.
The reproducible student pages take up more than half of the syllabus. These pages include homework pages for every lesson, short stories, and a final exam. Elsewhere, she refers to "dress ups," another term from Structure and Style. There are only a few such instances, but those unfamiliar with Structure and Style will find them puzzling. A Syllabus for Introduction to Literary Analysis should be great for those who want to create a full-year course, since the additional elements provide enough course content.
If you choose to skip Teaching the Classics, using the novels still ensures sufficient course content. Putting together a complex course like this on your own might be daunting, but with Pike having done much of the work for you, it should be very manageable.
