Besides voiding any standing warranties, it will negate static and dust protection. As it is, it may be simply more cost-effective to replace the system. PS2's are not very expensive right now, especially used ones.
You might also be able to get one from a friend who is looking to upgrade. Check retailers and offer the owner more than the retailer would pay but less than they would charge.
