If you want to connect to the wireless router by wireless, then you will need a wireless network card in the new machine.
If it has an empty PCI slot, then the wireless card can be installed internally. If not, then you would need a USB wireless network adapter. Networking is transparent to the operating system. You will not, however, be able to run programs installed on other computers. Any program that you want to run will have to be installed on the computer from which you are running it.
You will, however, be able to share data files Word documents, spreadsheets, pictures, etc. The Dimension L series could possibly have had the network card integrated on the motherboard or could have a separate PCI network card installed. You should be able to tell from the location of the RJ45 jack on the back of the computer, but look in Device Manager to make sure there is a network card installed. I have enabled it. Sound right? BTW, thank you very much for this help, Steve.
Appreciate it. If it is a Netgear card, then it was added later and was not installed by Dell. So there is no need to manually installed a driver. Windows Update used to provide periodic updates for this card, but I haven't received one in quite a while now.
